Project Title

Transferring knowledge and life experience between generations: The potential of community based intergenerational projects.

Project Description

This research project will investigate the potential of intergenerational projects to foster contact and reciprocal learning between young and old in urban and rural communities in Ireland. The research will involve collecting information and classifying the range of different types of intergenerational projects in different settings and locations in Ireland. Criteria will be developed to evaluate the benefits of intergenerational projects, drawing on the experiences of older and younger people. The project is being developed in collaboration with Age and Opportunity.

Full fees scholarship worth €10,000 over two years.

Student Requirements

An honours degree (minimum 2.1) in a relevant discipline such as sociology, social policy, education, social care, psychology. Candidates should have a genuine interest in older people and/or young people and have awareness of issues related to quality of life, participation and empowerment.of both age groups. Experience of working with older people or in youth work would be an advantage. Candidates should have good interpersonal communication skills and good writing skills. Previous experience in research methodology would be desirable.
