Azure explores how people with dementia-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s, and the people who care for them, can have a deeper involvement in cultural institutions and can participate in cultural activities. Azure is a partnership between Age & Opportunity, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Butler Gallery Kilkenny

Azure is built on a fundamental principle that people are entitled to be active cultural participants at all stages of the ageing process and should have access to different ways of doing this.

Living with Dementia

Latest estimates suggest that some 41,700 people in Ireland are living with dementia. By 2041, the number of people aged over 65 is expected to reach 1.3 million (an increase of 180%). An estimated 140,000 people are anticipated to be living with dementia by this date.

The Azure project partners see a clear contribution by the project to address the inclusion of people with dementia and their families, friends and carers within our communities, in this case from an Arts & Cultural perspective.

Learning from Good Practice

The original pilot for Azure is based on the ‘Meet Me’ model, as created by MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, New York). It was piloted in the Butler Gallery Kilkenny. An evaluation report was produced and a round table held at the end of 2012 to bring together key stakeholders in the age, dementia, arts and culture sectors to share the findings from Azure and hear key inputs from international experts. We are currently exploring the potential of the project to make it possible for more people to participate in this initiative.
