CarePALs Workshops

Go for Life is the national programme for sport and physical activity for older people in Ireland. It is run by volunteers who we call PALs. A PAL is a Physical Activity Leader who is willing to lead activities.  CarePALs workshops aim to empower staff and volunteers in day and residential care settings to lead suitable physical activities with older people. The model developed by Go for Life means that staff can deliver physical activity sessions, which can then be included as part of the daily or weekly routine without additional costs to the care service.

Who is CarePALs aimed at?

CarePALs is for staff members or volunteers currently working in a residential or day care centre. You are not expected to have any background or formal experience in leading physical activities but you will need to have an interest in learning to lead physical activities. You will alsoneed a commitment from your employer to enable you to put a programme in place following your CarePALs training.

What is involved?

CarePALs takes place over two separate days with an opportunity between the first and second day to try out what you have learned. It is free to staff or volunteers of care settings.

What are the benefits?

  • An increased awareness of the social, psychological and health benefits of physical activity for older people of all ages and abilities;
  • Staff of care settings will be able to lead Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) sessions for older people with varied levels of ability on a regular basis;
  • Enhanced health and improved service for people who live in care settings
