Máire Murphy Active Programme PALs Coordinator
Máire began working with Age & Opportunity in July 2023, in the newly created role of Active Programme PALs Coordinator.
Our PALs (Physical Activity Leaders) initiative is an education and peer leadership initiative which trains older people how to lead sport and physical activity sessions in their local groups and communities. We have a network of trained PALs around the country.
Our Physical Activity Leaders initiative also encompasses our CarePALs and PPALs initiatives.
Our CarePALs initiative trains those working or volunteering in nursing homes and day care settings to lead suitable physical activities with people in their care. Our PPALs initiative trains older adults with intellectual disability to take a leadership role promoting physical activity among their peers.
Our research has shown that older person’s groups and their associated Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) were severely impacted by the debilitating effects of the pandemic. However, it also shows that hundreds of PALs (within community and residential care settings) across the country, have returned to leading physical activity in their groups.
Supporting our PALs, revitalising their groups and the strengthening and expansion of our PALs network are key strategic priorities for us over the next three years and Máire’s role as PALs Coordinator is a key part of this strategy.
Máire has always had a keen interest in people’s health and wellbeing. She has an undergraduate degree in Nutritional Science and holds a Masters in Public Health where she focused on health promotion.
Prior to working with Age & Opportunity Máire worked across many different fields from teaching to health promotion as well as being a manager in the HSE. Her main interests are looking at how people can live their best and healthiest lives and ensuring that people the skills to do this at every stage of life.
