A national listing of arts events throughout the year that are welcoming to older persons

What is the Arts Events Listings?

Age & Opportunity’s Arts Events Listings in a national listing of cultural events taking place throughout the year which are particularly welcoming to older people. It was inspired by Bealtaine Festival participants, GPs and social prescribers asking about age-friendly events outside of the festival month of  May. Events range from concerts, dances, workshops, discussions, exhibitions, tours, screenings and other cultural initiatives.

Advertising on the Arts Events Listings is a great way to signify that your event is accessible and committed to the inclusion of older people. We have a large audience of older people who are consistently seeking activities and events in their nearby area throughout the year. Our Arts Events Listings bring some of the highest traffic through our website, with over 1000 people every month viewing them via our newsletter alone.

How does it work?

Organisations and individuals can sign up and register their events on the Bealtaine website so that people can check out what’s happening around Ireland throughout the year (apart from during May, when events are part of Bealtaine Festival). Furthermore, we highlight events weekly on our social media, benefitting from our 12,000 followers over Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

How can I get involved – as an audience member?

If you are an audience member, simply go to Bealtaine.ie and choose Arts Events Listings. Search by county to find age-friendly events in your area.

How can I get involved – as an organiser?

If you are an arts organisation or individual who is running an event, you can register on the Bealtaine site (or log in if you are already a Bealtaine event organiser) and post your event here.

We believe that, whether you are 8 or 80 years old, we all should have access and opportunities to attend and participate in the arts and to realise our creative potential. Fresh thinking, bold experimentation and creativity are all fundamental to delivering a high quality of life for older people.

Research shows that arts programmes involving music, visual arts and drama, among other activities, have a profound influence on the quality of life of older people, with positive impacts on health, psychological well-being, confidence and autonomy as well as other benefits such as:

  • happiness
  • mental wellbeing
  • reduced stress
  • improved cognition
  • sense of identity and personhood
  • increased self-esteem and confidence
  • reduced boredom.
