The European elections take place on May 24th, on the same day as local elections and the referendum on divorce.
This year there are 59 candidates running in three constituencies. The breakdown by constituency is as follows:
Ireland South has 23 candidates running for 5 seats.
Ireland gained two extra MEPs as a result of Brexit. They were allocated to Dublin which previously had 3 and South which previously had 4. The South constituency also gained two extra counties, Laois and Offaly.
Age & Opportunity, in partnership with the Age Friendly Cities and Counties Programme has organised pre-election meetings in each constituency so that we can question candidates on their views and commitments regarding older people.
Our Ireland South constituency event takes place on Friday 17th May at The Metropole Hotel, Cork city 2-4.30pm.
The Alliance of Age Sector NGOs has adopted a Manifesto so that we can make our concerns and demands clear to MEPs. We hope that every candidate will agree to sign up to the manifesto, so that we can remind whoever is successfully elected of their commitments to older people.
Is Ireland South your constituency?
South consists of: Carlow, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.
We will also be hosting meetings on the following dates and locations:
Midlands North-West: Monday May 13th at the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone from 2-4.30pm
Dublin: Wednesday 15th May at the Ashling Hotel 2-4.30pm
South: Friday 17th May at The Metropole Hotel, Cork city 2-4.30pm.
