Dance Ireland and Age & Opportunity, in consultation with Dance Theatre of Ireland present the Floor is Yours!, a networking event for dance artists, companies and organisations working with older people, which aims to strengthen and provide visibility for the sector. The event offers workshops, discussions and presentations from those working in the field nationally and internationally.

Session 1: Health and Aging
Experts in geriatric health discussing the social, physical and psychological impacts of aging in individuals, highlighting key points that a dance practitioner would need to be aware of in working with older people.
Dr. Graham Hughes, Gerontologist St. Vincent’s & Chairman Move4Parkinsons; Eilis Hession formerly Manager Social Care HSE and Founder Living Well with Dementia; and Dr. Christine McGarrigle, a researcher who will speak about TILDA, the Irish Longitudinal Aging Study.
Session 2: Case Study – Falls Prevention UK
With Rose Kigwana, Senior Producer, Participation at South East Dance; Angela Conlan, Arts Manager/Dance Artist.
Rose will introduce to South East Dance’s fall preventions work and specialist, Angela will talk about her experience as a dance artist working with South East Dance on projects for older people and her work in hospitals.
Session 3: Falls Prevention Practice Workshops
With Angela Conlan
This practical session lead by Angela will cover some of the basics when working with older people covering conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis.
We will explore ways of building strength and balance creatively giving workshop participants an overview of how a dance session can be structured in a fun, accessible and engaging way.

Session 1: Care Settings vs Community Settings
Loretta Yurick and Ailish Claffey will examine theses different contexts and approaches to working within them, followed by a Q&A
Session 2: Sharing Practice
5 x 15 sessions mins, introducing new ideas for sessions and guidance on warm ups, cool downs and online practice, led by Robert O’Connor from Dance Theatre of Ireland, with contributions from Olwyn Lyons, Aoife McAtamney, Philippa Donnellan, and Kristyn Fontanella.
Session 3: Forum:
An invitation to discuss the needs of the sector, developing a network for practitioners working with older people, led by Dance Ireland and Age & Opportunity.
Plenary: Overview of Covid response and actions to take forward
