Physical Activity Leaders in Care Settings
What is CarePALs?
CarePALs are Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) who have been trained to lead physical activities specifically in day and residential care settings.
How does it work?
The programme has been designed to enable care staff to deliver physical activity sessions, which can be included as part of the daily or weekly routines, without additional costs to the care service.
Participants are not expected to have any background or formal experience in leading physical activities but they will need to have an interest in learning to lead physical activities. They will also need a commitment from their employer to put a programme in place following their CarePALs training.
The workshops offer a number of different benefits to participants including:
- an increased awareness of the social, psychological and health benefits of physical activity for older people of all ages and abilities;
- the opportunity to lead Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) sessions for older people with varied levels of ability on a regular basis;
- the chance to improve health and service for people living in care settings.
The CarePALs is offered as a two-day workshop, to offer participants an opportunity between the first and the second day to try out what they have learned in their workplace.
